Netanyahu’s Cancelation of India Trip Fuels Speculation

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has canceled a trip to India a week prior to his scheduled departure, fueling speculation that he is planning a different high-profile diplomatic initiative ahead of the September 17 national election. The move was especially surprising given the well-known bond Netanyahu has formed with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, rumors have started to swirl about a possible visit to Israel by either US President Donald Trump or, more likely, Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is also possible that Netanyahu could travel to Washington or Moscow. Israeli media reported this week that President Trump was planning a “grand gesture” ahead of Israel’s re-do of election that would reinforce Washington’s commitment to securing the safety of the Jewish state. The US leader is also reportedly discussing with Netanyahu the possibility of forging a bilateral defense pact that would require both countries to come to each other’s defense in the event of war. Any of these developments would be a boon for Netanyahu and most probably boost his electoral prospects.
