Netanyahu’s Legal Fate Set for Next Step

The next step in the saga of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s legal woes will be determined next week when the head of Israel’s police force (a national, not local body) and decides whether to recommend to the state prosecutor that the PM be indicted as the result of two corruption investigations. Prosecutors are believed to have two solid cases strengthened by states’ witnesses who have testified pursuant to plea bargains but were privy to events. In one case, the prime minister is accused of accepting expensive gifts from prominent friends in return for his granting favors – which amounts to bribery. In the other, Netanyahu stands accused of offering to back legislation that would benefit one Israeli newspaper in its battle for prominence with a competitor. This, in return for positive newspaper coverage in the run-up to an election. Netanyahu has insisted all along that the charges are frivolous but the media coverage has consistently painted a dark picture for the PM.
