The Netherlands froze diplomatic ties with Iran on Saturday after a dual Dutch-Iranian national was hanged in Tehran. Zahra Bahrami was originally arrested for taking part in an anti-government demonstration. After her incarceration, charges against her were elevated to drug smuggling – the charge for which she was hanged. In response, the Dutch government froze “all official contacts between diplomats and civil servants,” according to a government spokesman. As late as Friday, Iranian officials told their Dutch counterparts that judicial recourse in the case had not yet been exhausted. The Iranian government refused to recognize Bahrami’s dual citizenship.
