New Iranian Missile Unveiled: Tehran Says it won’t abide by Part of Agreement

Iran unveiled a new surface-to-surface solid-fuel ballistic missile (Fatteh 313) with a 300-mile range on Saturday, and in doing so made clear that it will not abide by a section of the nuclear agreement negotiated with the so-called P-5+1 that requires United Nations Security Council approval for transferring ballistic missile technology to Iran during the next eight years. Speaking on state television, President Hassan Rohani declared that, “We will buy, sell and develop any weapons we need and we will not ask for permission or abide by any resolution for that.” According to defense sources in Tehran, production of the Fatteh 313 system is ready to begin. The Iranians make no secret of their intent to sell the missile system to allies – and proxies – in the region contrary to the agreement. The unveiling of the new missile and the blatant disregard for the agreement comes as the supporters and critics of the controversial deal in the United States are facing-off in a myriad of forums prior to the September 17 vote by Congress. A resolution of rejection is expected to pass followed by a fight in both houses to override the promised veto by President Obama. Most observers believe the president will succeed in the latter vote. In another development related to Iran’s ongoing military build-up, the American magazine Defense News is reporting that the possibility exists whereby China could sell Israeli state-of-the-art defensive radar to Iran and other enemies of the Jewish state. According to the magazine, a Chinese defense firm accredited by the army is advertising an advanced airborne radar system it claims is based on “field-proven experience” from ELTA Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. The Chinese firm’s catalogue brags that its system “incorporates ELTA’s decades of field-proven experience with real operational feedback from Israel Air Force combat pilots.” Defense News reports that China is already in the process of selling the system to Iran and other nations. The story was reported in Israel by Globes newspaper.
