Outrage and controversy are greeting Monday’s passage of a new Israeli law that distinguishes between Muslim and Christian Arab citizens. The bill, which was sponsored by a member of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, has been attacked as being divisive. Its sponsor has explained in a newspaper interview that its intent is to “bring [Israelis] closer to Christians…a counter-balance against Muslims who want to destroy the state from within.” Others criticized the bill as having no practical effect and some, in defending the bill, argued that Israeli Muslims have been openly supporting Israel’s enemies.
