New Report on Israel’s Skyrocketing Housing Prices Skewers Government

Israel’s housing prices rose 55 percent from 2008 to 2013 and there is a shortage of more than 100,000 apartments. The 300 page report by Israel’s comptroller Joseph Shapira blames Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu as well as his predecessor Ehud Olmert for failing to deal with the housing crisis. The report, which comes less than three weeks before Israel’s national election, could lead to a drop in support for Netanyahu. The government tried to blame Israel’s Finance Minister Yair Lapid, for the housing shortage. Meanwhile, Netanyahu could face another challenge if Israel’s Attorney General decides to open a criminal investigation into the spending at the Prime Minister’s official residence. The police this week said there is room to open an investigation into whether the Prime Minister and his wife Sara used state funds for personal expenses such as private domestic help.
