New Tiff between Israel and the UN: Plans to “Examine” Treatment of Rights Groups

While tension between Israel and the United Nations remains intense following passage of the UNESCO resolution that denies linkage between Judaism and Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, a new issue has emerged with a UN Mideast envoy announcing that he plans to examine the treatment of human rights organizations by the Israeli government. Michael Lynch, a special representative for human rights in the Palestinian territories, has accused the Netanyahu government of seeking to “delegitimize” rights organizations. His premise is predicated on domestic reaction to officials of self-described human rights organizations speaking against government policy before the Security Council. Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon, in an angry reply, said the UN official is “not credible” because he heads a “biased organization.” He said, “The lies spread by extremist organizations are ‘ammunition’ in the hands of those hostile to Israel and provides legitimization for those who wish to act against us in the international arena.”
