Nigeria Mulls Peacekeepers for Somalia

With no end in sight to the bloodshed in Somalia, Nigeria is considering sending peacekeeping forces into the war-torn country in the Horn of Africa, according to Reuters. The African Union approved an 8,000-strong mission but so far only Uganda and Burundi have sent soldiers into Somalia, leaving a shortfall of more than 5,000. The entry of AU troops is meant to signal an end to Ethiopia’s military presence in the country. Ethiopia has been propping up the Western-backed transitional government, which is fighting Islamist forces. However, many in Somalia accuse Ethiopia of being a destabilizing presence. Thousands have lost their lives in fighting over the last couple of years, with many more fleeing their homes.
