No End in Sight to Iraqi Street Protests

The demonstrations that have brought tens of thousands of Iraqis to the streets over the past month show no sign of letting up as demonstrators did battle with government forces in the very early hours of Sunday. One death was reported and “scores of injuries” were treated at local hospitals. Riot police were said to be trying to keep demonstrators away from the area of Baghdad that houses many of the foreign embassies. Overnight, demonstrators blocked the roads leading to the port of Umm Qasr near the city of Basra. Those participating in the demonstrations want nothing less than the resignation of Prime Minister Mahdi and the entire “ruling elite.” They say the protests are aimed at “real reforms,” rather that the “fake promises” they have heard from the government before.
