No Progress in Monday’s Peace Talks

Another round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians ended on Monday with no progress reported. Both sides are trying to show some movement in time for President Bush’s arrival on January 8th, but this time the roadblock was the Israeli announcement of plans to build 740 new housing units in two post-1967 neighborhoods. The Palestinians argue that Israel accepted the Road Map peace plan which specifically forbids any building at all in post-1967 areas – including building that accommodates natural growth of the communities. The Israelis argue that they are not obligated to implement the Road Map until the Palestinians have ended attacks against the Jewish state.
