No Tangible Results from Yemen Peace Talks

Talks aimed at restoring peace in Yemen concluded in Bern on Sunday with no discernable results to report following six days of trying. As fighting continued unabated despite a supposed ceasefire, the parties agreed to resume talks next month. Tenuous as it may be, the ceasefire has been extended by another seven days. If there was any progress, it was agreement regarding the necessity to allow humanitarian aid and supplies to reach those in need. There was also a vague “agreement in principle” to release prisoners, but there was no specificity of details. Troops loyal to President Hadi have continued to keep the pressure on the Iranian-backed Shiite Houthis. On Saturday, a missile fired from Yemen landed inside of Saudi Arabia killing three civilians. Loyalists seized the northern town of Haradh on Saturday amid reports that more than 68 people died in the fighting.
