Olmert Enlarges Israeli Government

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is set to increase his government by 11 parliamentary seats when he brings into the cabinet a right-wing party headed by Russian ex-patriate Avigdor Lieberman. The move is controversial and threatens Olmert’s alliance with the Labor Party, the largest coalition partner. In order to bring Lieberman aboard, Olmert has created a new post for him that will be called minister-without-portfolio in charge of strategic threats, with the focus on Iran. He has no particular expertise in the area. Further sweetening the pot for Lieberman, Olmert will make him a deputy prime minister and give him a seat on the powerful security cabinet – the subcommittee of cabinet ministers dealing with defense isssues.
