Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has reinstated defense official Amos Gilad to his position as envoy to negotiations being brokered by Egypt. The move comes after Gilad apologized to Olmert for criticizing the prime minister to a mass-circulation newspaper. Gilad’s remarks earned him a tongue-lashing from Olmert, along with the termination of his duties and a formal complaint to the Civil Service Commission. Gilad had been Israel’s point person in Egyptian-brokered talks with Hamas regarding a cease-fire, the return of captured soldier Gilad Shalit and the issue of smuggling tunnels.
