Olmert Responds Positively to Lebanese Peace-Talks Proposal

Just 48 hours after Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora rejected a proposal for peace talks from Israel premier Ehud Olmert, Lebanon’s parliament speaker, Nabih Beri, has rekindled hope for an Israeli-Lebanese peace deal. The time is ripe for the Arab world to get behind the so-called Saudi land-for-peace initiative, launched in 2002. Olmert immediately said he would be happy to meet the Lebanese premier or any other senior official from Beirut. Recent reports, denied by Jerusalem and Riyadh, suggest Olmert recently met senior Saudi officials in a bid to launch a regional initiative aimed at ending the state of war and diplomatic impasse between Israel and its Arab neighbors.
