Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told Israel Radio on Thursday that overtures for peace talks coming from Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad "cannot be taken seriously." Olmert accusedSyria of being "the main supporter of the Palestinian terror groups who daily try to carry out terrorism against the State of Israel." Accordingly, he said, "In my opinion, this is not a foundation on which it is possible to hold peace negotiations." Asad’s calls for negotiations with Israel are not infrequent. The latest came in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel. Olmert also said he hoped to meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud ‘Abbas "in the coming days."
