Oman Stops Visas for Several Professions

In yet another sign that Gulf countries are swamped with foreign labor, the Omani government has announced it will no longer issue visas for foreign workers in a variety of jobs. The Ministry of Manpower says it is attempting to encourage Oman’s residents to work as cleaners, electricians, tailors, ironmongers and in the textile industry and health clubs, among others. All the Gulf’s Arab states are trying to “nationalize” the workforce, according to an analyst at The Media Line. “The nationalization process has become a major labor-market policy; however, for the time being it has produced meager results,” he said.
