Oman to Open “Embassy to the State of Palestine”

In an announcement timed to coincide with the U.S.-sponsored “economic workshop” in Bahrain that the Palestinians refused to attend in part due to the American removal of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Oman has declared its plans to establish a full diplomatic embassy in “the state of Palestine.” The facility will be opened in Ramallah, the recognized diplomatic and administrative capital of the Palestinians. The announcement was tweeted by the foreign ministry, said, “In continuation of Oman’s support for the Palestinian people, the Sultanate of Oman has decided to open a diplomatic mission at the level of embassy in the State of Palestine.” Palestinian diplomat Hanan Ashrawi welcomed the announcement but her words were tinged with a warning that Oman not consider using the new embassy to justify establishing some form of relations with Israel as well. She admonished Oman that, “If this has a political price attached then certainly there will be ramifications.”
