Conflicts and disasters resulted in one person being displaced from their homes every second during the year 2016. According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center, some 31 million people were forced from their homes last year. The Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 7 million, while storms, floods and wildfires caused 24 million Asians to lose their homes. The IDMC noted that those who lose their homes but remain inside the borders of their country cannot receive international protection, often resulting in humanitarian crises that eventually spill across the border.
