Over 100 Killed in Syria by Government Air Strikes

The Syrian government has been bombing Aleppo for four days, killing over 100 people and overwhelming hospitals already stretched thin by years of fighting. The air assault comes ahead of peace talks in Geneva planned for January.

The worst air strikes came on Sunday, when over 70 people, including at least 28 children, were killed in a series of air raids, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Observatory reported that more air attacks by the government killed 15 people Monday and 12 people on Tuesday.

Syria is embroiled in a civil war that has spread throughout the country and spilled over into neighboring countries. Lebanese state media reported that two refugee children from Syria, aged 9 and 3, were killed today when the roof of the substandard building they were renting collapsed. The 1.4 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, who now make up more than one-quarter of the country’s population are threatening to overwhelm Lebanon.

The civil war in Syria has raged for almost three years, with no end in sight. Until recently, the international community was supporting the Free Syrian Army (FSA), a loose-knit group of secular rebels who were at the forefront of the war until recently. But a growing number of Islamic rebel factions have begun to challenge the FSA.

Non-lethal aid from the US and UK was recently stopped after a major FSA command post and warehouse fell to Islamist forces, causing FSA commander Gen. Salim Idris to flee to Qatar. The international community says organizes peace talks between the Syrian National Coalition, the political body of the opposition that is linked to the FSA, and the Syrian government will begin next month, but many are skeptical that they will succeed.
