Over 90,000 Killed in Yemen War Since 2015

According to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), more than 91,000 people have been killed in the fighting in Yemen since a Saudi-led coalition of Sunni nations in March 2015 intervened militarily after Iranian-backed Shi’ite Houthi rebels captured the capital Sanaa and overthrew the internationally recognized government. ACLED reported that approximately 17,100 people were killed in 2015; 15,100 in 2016; 16,800 in 2017; 30,800 in 2018; and 11,900 so far in 2019. The organization further found 4,500 instances in which civilians were directly targeted, resulting in about 11,700 deaths, some 8,000 attributed to coalition activities such as airstrikes. These figures do not include deaths caused by the still-unfolding humanitarian disaster in Yemen, where the vast majority of the 28-million-strong population is in dire need of aid. It is believed that 15 million people there are on the brink of starvation.
