Pakistan Mourns Nationals Killed in Oman Mosque Attack, Bodies Repatriated

This week, Pakistan saw the somber return of four nationals killed in a devastating attack on a Shiite mosque in Oman, officials confirmed on Friday. The repatriation was conducted by Pakistan International Airlines, under government orders, with the bodies arriving in Islamabad and Lahore where grieving families awaited.

Abdullah Hafeez, a spokesperson for the airline, confirmed that the bodies were handed over to the victims’ relatives for burial. Subsequently, funerals were held in the victims’ home cities, drawing hundreds of mourners to pay their respects.

The attack occurred on Monday in Muscat, Oman’s capital, where gunmen stormed the mosque during prayers on the eve of Ashoura—a significant Shiite mourning festival commemorating the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for this attack, marking a rare and violent breach of peace in Oman, with Omani police confirming that the assailants, all brothers and Omani citizens, were neutralized following the incident.
