Palestinian Authority Lashes Out At U.S. After Congress Passes Taylor Force Act

The Palestinian leadership reacted with fury over the weekend after the U.S. Congress passed with overwhelming bipartisan support the Taylor Force Act, named after a U.S. military veteran murdered by a Palestinian in a 2016 terror attack in Tel Aviv. The law will cut-off American aid to the Palestinian Authority unless it ends its “pay-for-slay” policy of providing hundreds of millions of dollars annually to terrorists imprisoned in Israel and to the families of those killed in altercations with the Israeli army. In response, Palestinian envoy to Washington Husam Zumlot contended the move “severely damages the prospects for peace in the Middle East” and described it as a political ploy to pressure the PA back to the negotiating table with Israel. For its part, Jerusalem expressed gratitude for the passing of the measure, with Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan noting that the law would significantly help in “the struggle against [PA President Mahmoud] Abbas’ incitement to terrorism and murder.” Erdan called on the Israeli parliament to finalize a similar bill being drafted which would see Israel deduct the amount the PA allocates to its “martyr” program from the taxes and tariffs Jerusalem collects on its behalf.
