Palestinian Authority Maintains Peace After UN Gambit

Contrary to frequent predictions of unrest following the launch of the Palestinian bid for UN membership on Friday. Most significant was the absence of violence following an incident in which Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian demonstrator. Violence appeared limited to rock-throwing at Israeli vehicles in post-1967 areas. But so far, the five additional battalions activated by the Israeli army as a precaution for large-scale violence in the West Bank have not been needed. Israeli military officials are on-record expressing satisfaction with the level of coordination between Israeli and Palestinian security chiefs. The lethal incident occurred on Saturday when troops were summoned to defuse a confrontation between Israeli residents of post-1967 areas and Palestinians alleging that they were vandalizing Palestinian fields. Soldiers used live ammunition when they were unable to disperse the crowd with non-lethal methods. Israeli troops went on high alert on Friday after the army received what it called “concrete intelligence” that Hamas was planning to infiltrate from Egypt and carry out a terrorist attack, an act not necessarily related to the UN gambit.
