Palestinian Authority To Submit Charges of Alleged Israeli War Crimes to Hague

The Palestinian Authority said it will today submit an extensive report of alleged war crimes by Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague. In a statement the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) said the report is an important step “in the process of ending Israeli impunity and bringing justice to the Palestinian people.” The report focuses on Israeli activities in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and east Jerusalem since June, 2014, the day after Hamas kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers, followed by the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza which left more than 2100 Palestinians and 70 Israelis dead. The ICC has already opened a preliminary investigation into Israel’s conduct in Gaza last summer, and the PLO’s report could encourage the ICC to open a full investigation. The Palestinian report comes the same week that the UN Human Rights Council issued its own report that found that both Israel and Hamas may have committed war crimes. Israeli officials condemned the new PLO report, with Israel’s foreign ministry spokesman calling it “a crude and cynical attempt to politicize the work of the ICC,” and “nothing more than Palestinian public relations,” according to The Jerusalem Post. At the same time, it confirmed that Palestinians have given up on bilateral peace talks with Israel and believe they will have more success in the UN or the ICC.
