Palestinian Authority’s Investment Arm and Education Ministry in Deal for Solar Powered Schools

Palestinian schools in the West Bank will have solar power in about four years as the result of an agreement signed between the Palestinian Authority’s investment division, the Palestinian Investment Fund (PIF) and the PA’s Ministry of Education on Tuesday. According to the agreement, PIF will fund the installation of solar panels on the roofs of some 500 schools located in the West Bank. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah Education Minister Sabri Saidam, who said the solar program was part of plan to “develop and enhance the education system in Palestine.” What was not disclosed was the extent to which Israeli authorities were included in the plan because many of the schools earmarked for the solar program are located in “Area C” – the designation created by the 1993 Oslo Accords for both Israeli civil and military control. Palestinian schools in that zone will require Israel to sign-off on the project.
