The persistence showed by the pro-Palestinian “BDS” movement – the group that encourages “boycott, divestment and sanctions” against Israel and tries to discourage international organizations and personalities from doing any programming with their Israeli counterparts or bringing its specialties to the Jewish state scored a clear win with the announcement that Argentina’s soccer team will renege on its commitment to play an exhibition match against the Israel team. The proposed warm-up game for the World Cup series was of huge interest to Israeli fans of the sport and magnified by the bonus of having the opportunity to see superstar Lionel Messi play. But endless cajoling coupled with old fashioned death threats made it an easy decision for the Argentinians and heartbreak for Israeli soccer (football, locally) aficionados. After the match that would have been played in Jerusalem on Saturday, the Argentinian team’s next date was – and remains – the start of its World Cup campaign against Russia on June 15.
