Deploying international peacekeepers in the Gaza Strip, even if they are from Arab nations, would just be another occupation like Israel’s, according to Palestinian factions in Gaza, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad. A Hamas spokesman said the purpose of such a force would be to "erase the Palestinian legitimacy and the Palestinian resistance." A spokesman for Islamic Jihad accused the Palestinian Authority, based in Ramallah, of trying to "monopolize the Palestinian decision." The factions see the use of an international force as a means of "protecting the Israeli occupation."
