Palestinian Family Opts to Destroy Home to Avoid City Fees
Faced with the choice of doing it themselves or paying demolition fees to the Jerusalem Municipality for wrecking their home which was built without proper permits, a Palestinian family chose to destroy their own house according to the Ma’an news agency. Many homes built without city authorization are destroyed, but the Palestinian residents of the east Jerusalem neighborhoods where it typically happens argue that permits are virtually impossible for them to obtain. Some families have successfully petitioned Israeli courts for relief, but such cases are rare – as are families who destroy their home themselves. The home in question is located in an area where the city of Jerusalem planned for decades to use the area for public entities such as parks and recreation areas, but the reliance on eminent domain doesn’t move those with illegal homes.
