Israeli authorities fear that claims by a Palestinian group claiming to be holding an 18-year-old Israeli resident of a post-1967 community that were at first dismissed may be true. Eliyahu Asheri has been missing from Itamar, near Nablus, since Sunday. On Wednesday morning, the group claiming to be holding Asheri, told the Al Jazeera network that unless Israel called off its intrusion into the Gaza Strip, their captive would "be butchered in front of television cameras." Nevertheless, while Israeli officials are not completely convinced that the group is holding Asheri, the kidnap claims are being taken seriously.
