Palestinian Leaders Threaten “Harsh Palestinian Decisions” if Terror Stipends are Offset

A new Israeli bill mandating an offset of funding paid to terrorists’ families set-off Palestinian anger on Tuesday. The legislation would reduce the amount Israel collects monthly in taxes and tariffs and transfers to the PA pursuant to the 1993 Oslo Accords by the amounts paid in stipends to the families of terrorists who died or were arrested while carrying out violent acts. The Israelis call it “slay-for-pay” but the Palestinians counter that if the Palestinian Authority refuses to reach out to “families of martyrs” and those who are jailed, then much more extremist elements will vie for their support. Speaking for PA President Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeinah warned that if the bill is implemented, “it will lead to harsh decisions” by Palestinians, but declining to elaborate further. More than $330 million was paid out last year and in some cases the detainees have said they perpetrated the violence in order to receive regular funding.
