Palestinian leaders over the next few days will continue to convene to discuss Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s declared negation last Thursday of all agreements signed with Israel. Abbas has in the past repeatedly made identical threats – foremost to end security cooperation with Israel – that he never implemented. Accordingly, both PA and Israeli officials have expressed reservations that Abbas’s call could be actualized. His announcement followed Israel’s demolition earlier in the week of several apartment buildings under construction in an East Jerusalem neighborhood in which structures have spilled over into an area of the West Bank that is supposed to be under full PA control. Ramallah has been at loggerheads with both the Israeli government and the White House over what Abbas has referred to as the “slap of the century,” a play on words of President Donald Trump’s Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, often referred to as the “deal of the century.” The PA has rejected the proposal out-of-hand and recently boycotted an event in Bahrain at which the economic elements of the initiative were unveiled.
