Palestinian News Agency: PA Will “Re-evaluate” Agreements with Israel

The Ma’an news agency is reporting a threat by the Palestinian Authority to “re-evaluate” existing agreements with Israel because of what it charges are repeated Israeli violations of those pacts. The report bears the threat of igniting a new “popular resistance to the occupation,” a phrase that can be read as a call to mass non-violent demonstrations a la Ghandi, or a return to the violent ways of the first and second Intifadas. According to the agency, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is also considering renewing his campaign for full membership and recognition of statehood by the United Nations – an approach that failed this past fall and angered the US and Israel along the way. While the term “re-evaluate” has not been explained, it’s not expected that the PA will abrogate existing agreements.
