Palestinian Rocket Reaches Israel’s Main Southern City

A Grad rocket landed in the yard of a home in the main southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva on Wednesday. Officials reported damage to a number of nearby houses and vehicles and said that ten people were treated for “anxiety” related to the attack. Although rockets and mortars have been fired from Gaza with increasing frequency in recent weeks, Wednesday’s incident was the first involving Be’er Sheva since the Israeli ground incursion, Operation Cast Lead, in December 2008 and January 2009. The Israeli army launched an attack on targets it said belonged to the Al-Quds Brigades, an arm of the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization, which the Israelis charge was the behind the Grad firing. The Grad is a form of the Russian-made Katyusha which has a range in excess of 12 miles and carries an explosive payload.
