Palestinian security forces in the Gaza Strip blocked intersections and set tires on fire on Monday as they protested not having received their salaries from the Palestinian Authority. Traffic in the Gaza Strip was snarled by the protests. P.A. Chairman Mahmoud ‘Abbas’ Fatah forces engaged Hamas security personnel in a gunbattle in which one Hamas member was killed. Fatah says the violence will escalate when the religious festival of Eid-Al-Fiter concludes on Thursday. The school year is in danger of becoming a casualty of the Hamas-led government’s inability to pay its employees. Teachers throughout the PA are keeping the schools closed until they receive their salaries. School enrollment is 800,000 pupils. The teachers’ unions are considered to be pro-Fatah and have been accused of using the school lock-out as a means of bringing down the Hamas-led government.
