Palestinians Begin Lobbying in U.N. for Final Demarcation Lines

A Palestinian spokesman said on Thursday that efforts have begun to draft a Security Council resolution that will codify final lines of demarcation between Israel and a future Palestinian state. The Arab position is that Israel adhere to borders in effect before the 1967 war, meaning it gives up east Jerusalem and the West Bank. Israel already withdrew from the Gaza Strip. Last year Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Faya’d introduced a plan that sees infrastructure and institutions necessary for statehood to be completed within the next two years. At that time, statehood will be declared regardless of the status of negotiations with Israel. Since that time, the United States and other nations have embraced the two-year timetable to statehood.
