The Palestinian Authority has asked the United Nations and Western governments to bring war crimes charges against their nationals who serve in the Israeli army. In a letter sent to foreign ministers and to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, PA Foreign Minister Riad Al-Malki insisted that Israel has committed a “long line of war crimes” and that the Geneva Convention requires member states to “take all measures necessary to suppress violations of international law.” Israelis note that the war crimes gambit is a double-edged sword because under the terms Malki cites, the PA would bear liability for the ostensible war crimes committed by Hamas, which is a partner with the PA in the unity government, such as firing rockets into civilian populations.
