On Sunday, Jerusalem Day, the annual commemoration of the capture of the eastern portion of the ancient city in 1967, was peppered with violence as Palestinians threw rocks at some 120 Jews who chose to include a visit to the holy site as part of their commemoration. Tempers were stoked with the celebration falling on the final three days of the Islamic festival of Ramadan. Because of Jerusalem Day the area was not closed to Jews as it was for the final three days of Ramadan in previous years. The Old City was still reeling from a terrorist event on Friday when two Jewish men were stabbed by a Palestinian at the Damascus Gate entrance. One of the victims remains in critical condition. The attacker was shot and killed at the scene by Israeli police.
