The Palestinian Authority has committed to enacting legislation before the end of the year that would render so-called “honor killings” illegal and address other ways to protect women. One part of the law would be to establish a minimum age for marriage. The Media Line reported that the sudden interest in the plight of women stems from the massive outpouring of Palestinians who took to the streets to protest a recent “honor killing:” where 21-year old Israa Ghrayeb of the Beit Sahur neighborhood. Prosecutors allege that three members of Ghrayeb’s immediate family killed her after she posted to Instagram a photo of herself with a suitor.
