Panetta Rattles the Sword on Iranian Nukes

American Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said on Sunday that the U.S. is prepared to exercise a military option rather than allow Iran to create nuclear weapons. Speaking on the ABC News program “This Week,” Panetta insisted that allowing Iran to create nuclear weapons was not an option. He said the U.S. will not hesitate to use force in the event all diplomatic avenues are exhausted.  Panetta said, "An Iran with nuclear weapons is not on the table…The fundamental premise is that neither the United States nor the international community is going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon.” Panetta’s comments came as the head of Iran’s nuclear agency announced plans for a second reactor at Bushehr scheduled for completion in the early part of 2014. On Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency revealed that it has evidence that the Iranians have enriched uranium at the Fordo plant to 27% — significantly below the 90% needed to make nuclear weapons but also significantly greater than any previous enrichment efforts have yielded.
