Police in Jerusalem Step Up Alert After Palestinian Attack Kills Two

Police sent extra forces to Jerusalem, already on high alert, after a Palestinian man from east Jerusalem shot and killed a woman and a policeman in the city yesterday. Police spokesman Luba Samri said that residents and visitors to Jerusalem do not need to make any changes in their routine, but they should be on the alert for suspicious people and objects. Police officials also said they believe the attacker, armed with an M-16, intended to reach the center of Jerusalem, or the Central bus station, which are more crowded parts of the city, and carry out a mass attack. Israeli military analysts say that the “success” of the attack, could lead to other copycat incidents. They say there is little that Israel can do to protect itself from “lone wolf” attacks, such as the dozens of stabbings and car rammings that have taken place in Israel and the West Bank over the past year. In a video on YouTube, the attackers’ daughter called her father a “great man” and praised him for carrying out “acts of resistance” to Israel. Tensions are running high as tens of thousands of Israelis are expected to flood into Jerusalem for the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur and Sukkot.
