Political Positioning In Full Gear as Release of War Report Nears

The release of the final draft of the report by Israel‘s government-appointed commission to study the 2006 war in Lebanon is due this week, and as the date nears, political buzzards are circling a still-breathing prime minister. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, a member of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s Qadima party and viewed as one of three putative successors to Olmert, has come under criticism for agreeing to meet on Sunday with two public groups lobbying for Olmert’s resignation. Livni herself is also the target of criticism from these groups for reneging on her intent to call for Olmert’s resignation when the preliminary report of the war was issued last year. The pending report is also affecting the internal workings of the Labor party, Olmert’s largest coalition partner. Labor Chairman Ehud Barak promised during his election battle that he would leave the government once the report emerged, but appears to be backpedaling on his vow. Party members are split between those who want the party to leave the Olmert government and those who believe it must stay to support the peace process.
