The political website Politico is reporting that the White House has launched an “aggressive effort” to reassure Jewish leaders that there is no “fundamental change” in American policy toward Israel. The site reports that the final straw was public criticism of the administration from Obama stalwart Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who called the President’s tone on Israel “counterproductive.” Schumer said, “This has got to stop.” The Senator’s remarks apparently came after warning Obama chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel he would go public unless the administration changed its demand that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu “demonstrate his commitment to achieving peace.” Politico quotes an unnamed “former Democratic official” who explains that the administration “realized they were going down a bad path [because the Mideast policy is in chaos] so they launched a PR campaign – a blitz – entirely to support the policy.” The site concludes with the caution that “what was changed is the public relations strategy for the policy, not U.S. policy.”
