Pompeo to Visit Saudi Arabia Following Iran-attributed Attacks

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was set to arrive Tuesday in Saudi Arabia to discuss possible retaliation after Washington claimed it had proof that attacks on Saudi oil installations originated in Iran. American officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the AFP news agency that the Trump Administration had concluded that last Saturday’s assault on two critical Saudi sites – including the world’s largest petroleum processing facility – involved cruise missiles from Tehran. They added that the U.S. would provide evidence at next week’s United Nations General Assembly. The coordinated strikes, which included the use of numerous drones, temporarily cut Saudi oil production in half, to about 6 million barrels per day. Overall, the attacks shut 5 percent of world production, causing oil prices to surge more than 15% earlier.
