“Popular Terror” Continues to Increase with Fire Bombs and Stabbings in Jerusalem

It’s being called “popular terror” – violent acts carried out in a seemingly random way against a vehicle or a pedestrian with a Molotov cocktail or a knife. Security officials say it’s a form of violence that is virtually impossible to predict or interdict, and it’s growing at a frightening pace in the Israeli capital. On Wednesday, a Palestinian man who was convicted of murder but released from prison in the prisoner swap that repatriated captured soldier Gilad Shalit allegedly attacked Israeli Border Police officers near the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City, stabbing one policeman as he wrestled with them. The 56-year old resident of the West Bank city of Hebron had successfully entered Jerusalem despite not having a permit. Later that evening, Molotov Cocktails were hurled at a police jeep in an east Jerusalem neighborhood setting the vehicle on fire as its two occupants scurried to escape. Both forms of violence are on the rise during recent months. Despite increased vigilance by security agencies, the “lone-wolf” acts by single perpetrators is causing tensions to soar.
