Port Said Remains “Out of Control”; Death Sentences Handed Out

Anti-Morsi rioting raged in the Egyptian city of Port Said over the weekend with more than 30 reported killed and 315 wounded on Saturday alone. Angry mobs attacked the governor’s office, local prison and courthouse; and set fire to shops. President Mohamed Morsi convened an emergency meeting of the National Defense Council after violence broke out when it was announced that 21 defendants facing charges stemming from the 2011 soccer riot that claimed more than 70 lives were sentenced to death. Rioting in other cities was still underway as Egyptians demonstrated on the second anniversary of the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak and against the anti-democratic behavior of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood backers.
