President Trump Chases the “Ultimate Deal” to Israel, Palestinian Territories

US President Donald Trump embarks on the second leg of his tour of the world’s “three great religions” when he lands in Israel on Monday. For many Israelis, the elation of the visit and its expectations have been sharply curtailed in recent days as preparations for the visit were marred by confrontations and disagreements over the proposed itinerary and in one celebrated incident, a member of the American advance team curtly telling his Israeli counterpart that Judaism’s holiest site, the Western Wall, is not in Israel. Visions of an announcement that the US embassy will be moved to Jerusalem evaporated in a series of gestures by the Trump administration that places it firmly within the policy guidelines of previous administrations that so rankle Israel’s right-wing supporters. Prime Minister Netanyahu found it necessary to order his cabinet to show up at the airport welcoming ceremony after several ministers said they would not attend because President Trump would not include them in the greeting line. On the Palestinian side, which over-all has be pleasantly surprised by the Trump administration so far, senior officials have reportedly cautioned against expecting too much from the visit. Nevertheless, many observers believe that what is reasonable to expect is an announcement by the president of a rejuvenated peace talks with a one year target date for completion.
