President Trump Likens Self to ‘King of Israel’

US President Donald Trump has dragged Israel further into the depths of an ongoing partisan debate over the future course and nature of the bilateral relationship. The US leader tweeted remarks made earlier this week by Wayne Allyn Root, quoting the radio host as saying: “President Trump is the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America.… The Jewish people in Israel love him like he’s the King of Israel. They love him like he is the second coming of God.” The president then doubled down on comments he made the previous day suggesting that US Jews who vote for the Democratic presidential candidate in 2020 would be displaying either “total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty” to Israel. The Jewish state remains a hot-button issue following its decision to bar entry to the country to far-left Democratic lawmakers Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar; this, due to their support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement. Critics contend that BDS is inherently anti-Semitic, as the movement’s indirect call for a single state rather than two states means the dissolution of Israel. In response, the two Congresswomen are currently advocating cutting some $3 billion in annual US military aid to Israel.
