President Trump Warns Against Rush To Judgment In ‘Khashoggi Affair’

United States President Donald Trump appeared to defend Saudi Arabia by warning against a rush to judgment in the case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing two weeks ago after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The American leader’s comments came after he spoke by telephone with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who earlier in the day met in Riyadh with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Bin Salman, who burst onto the scene promoting himself as a reformist, has come under heavy fire over claims Khashoggi was murdered on his orders by a hit squad that later smuggled the reporter’s dismembered remains out of the country. Following an eight-hour-long inspection by Turkish authorities of the Istanbul mission, an official told the Associated Press that evidence was found proving that the journalist was indeed killed on the premises. Before traveling to Turkey, Pompeo suggested that Saudi leaders, while denying any advanced knowledge of a plot against Khashoggi, would accept accountability “including for senior officials.” Meanwhile, President Trump expressed confidence that the investigation into Khashoggi’s disappearance would be concluded in “less than a week.”
