Prime Minister Fayyad Met with Bank of Israel’s Stanley Fischer

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad met last Friday with Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer in Jerusalem. The meeting, which was reportedly held at Fayyad’s request, was first reported by the daily Maariv and confirmed by Fischer’s office. Although no official comment on the substance of the discussion has been revealed, the meeting has been described as an opportunity for Fayyad to seek the advice of Fischer, considered to be among the world’s leading financial experts, on the fiscal crisis facing the Palestinian Authority and possibly issues regarding preparing the Palestinian Authority for statehood. Fischer and Fayyad were colleagues at the World Bank in the 1990s. Fayyad’s position in the PA exceeds his titular authority because Western donor nations regard him as the assurance of fiscal responsibility needed before contributing to the PA.
