Protecting Israelis at Bus Stops, Anti-vehicle Barriers Installed

Responding to the growing and lethal phenomenon of “terror by vehicle” in which Palestinians have been attempting to run over pedestrians gathered in vulnerable locations, Israeli security authorities are installing anti-vehicle barriers at some 300 bus stops in Jerusalem. Reports indicate that the municipal government is coordinating with police to also identify potentially dangerous spots in addition to bus stops. The most recent attack came last week when a Palestinian man from an east Jerusalem neighborhood drove his car into a crowd at a bus stop wounding 11 including a baby who lost a leg. Police believe that had the driver not been shot dead by security officials at the scene he would have switched his attack to the ax discovered in his car. Israeli authorities see no sign of the wave of “popular terror” – seemingly random acts by individuals motivated to strike at Israelis – and blamed Palestinian leadership for inciting to violence. Israelis are particularly angered by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s reference to the phenomenon as “a justified popular uprising.”
